In 6th century A.D. one of the Syrian fathers - David - came to Tbilisi and lived in a cave of the mountain that towers over the city. Later, on that place, the church was built and the mountain was given the name of Saint David. Nowadays the people call it symply The Sacred Mountain. Mta - Mountain, Tsminda - Sacred, Holy, Saint. The region was given the same name later. Mtatsminda is one of the oldest and at the same time, one of the central regions of Tbilisi.
